What's the best way?
Published on June 7, 2008 By DigitalCHET In WindowBlinds
I wonder if anyone knows the best way to save a WindowBlinds TGA file into a PNG while keeping all the alpha values intact.

I thought i remembered SkinStudio having that functionality but it seems I was wrong, since I can't seem to find it.

Any ideas?

i on the other hand will save it as a png and re import....probably the long way round....but thats how i work......

Kitty, it seems you and I work the same way. I save all of my images in a separate folder as either pngs or bmps, whichever is appropriate. I let SKS convert the pngs. This way, if I need to change things, which happens a lot, I can just edit the images and re-import. Another thing I do, is I don't name my skin until I am finished with it....I use a letter or two for the name while I am working on it, and then when I am done, I re-name the skin, and all of the default junk is gone, as well as the temporary junk in there.

When ever I make docks I save all images from skins as pngs in Photoshop except bmp's...I have to copy and create a new image so it has a transparent background.

What's wrong with that?
That's exactly my point. What if I wanted to make say, a dock background for personal use based on the current blind I'm using?

Nothings wrong with it. I was asking him how we would do it. Basically trying to clarify the question. From the response given I think the original question was misunderstood.

I'm actually a little surprised that neither Photoshop, nor Fireworks aren't more intelligent about working with PNGs and TGAs and the conversions between them. I thought perhaps I was missing something, but it seems there's no easy function within either application.

Im not sure what your having an issue with Chet... If u want to open and edit an existing .tga.. just open it and edit it and save it... if you would rather work with a png.. have SKS convert it..then on reimport its a .tga again..

Works either way doesn't it.?

If anyone is having issues in PS CS \ CS2 \ CS3 you can take the Targa.8BI from PS7 and overwrite it in your current version of PS... it's located in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats\Targa.8BI

That will make the more current version os PS capable of handling .tga and no need for converting to png via SKS

I'm using a freeware tool, to convert tga to png, or bmp. The name is alphaconv and you can download it here:

Haven't used it very often, though. But who knows. Could come in handy someday.

But what if someone wanted to take a tga from one of your windowblinds and save it as a png to use to make a skin for personal use?
Adam also wrote a seperate applet that will convert tgas to pngs and back again.
It's still available here. WWW Link You could give that a try.

Yep. Noticed, that both are the same programs. And it works good.

every time i tried in psp sks said it was invalid, wrong or just plain corrupt

Bichur, I have been struggling with psp also and have made some headway with png and tga formatting. If you'd like, privite message me and I would be more than happy to share/impart whatever information might be useful.
